A selection of directories covering Spelthorne and dating back more than 200 years have gone on public display.

The documents, which are equivalent to today's telephone directories, are available to view at Spelthorne Museum in Elmsleigh Road, Staines.

Screen star's gelding romps home

Star of screen and stage James Nesbitt was at Kempton Park on Monday January 26 to see his horse win the opening race of the afternoon.

The actor, famous for his roles in Cold Feet, Bloody Sunday and Murphy's Law, leads the Jimmy Nesbitt Partnership, owner of jump racing horse Riverside Theatre.

The five-year-old gelding has run five times in its career, and came up trumps for the second time at the Staines Road East track, prevailing under top Irish rider Barry Geraghty in a comfortable four-and-a-half length success.

Comedy writer Jan Etherington is holding a two-day course from March 7-8 at the Riverside Arts Centre, Thames Street, Lower Sunbury.

The theme is Make Comedy Count and guest speaker will be comedy and crime writer, radio producer and novelist Simon Brett.

River narrow escape

Firefighters were called to rescue a man spotted in the river on Saturday January 24 at Thames Street, Lower Sunbury, at about 5pm but he managed to get himself out before they arrived.

Tennis courts in Spelthorne are to be refurbished after the borough council allocated 110,000 over the next three years.

The money will be spent resurfacing the courts in Cedars Park in Lower Sunbury, Clockhouse Lane in Ashford, the Lammas in Staines, Stanwell Recreation Ground, Fordbridge Park in Ashford, Staines Park and Bishop Duppas Park in Shepperton.

PCSO Gemma Roberts is leaving Lower Sunbury's neighbourhood police team to join the regular force and train as a police constable.

Her departure follows that of PCSO Gerry Beadle, who had to stand down for personal resons.

Voluntary Action in Spelthorne is offering charities working in the borough the chance to use free office space at Community Link, based within the council offices at Knowle Green, Staines.

Users have access to meeting and interview rooms as well as equipment such as a photocopier, shredder and laminator.

Meet your bobby

Beat bobbies in Spelthorne will be targeting a street in the borough every week in a bid to get to know as many residents as possible.

Every week officers from each of Spelthorne's 10 safer neighbourhood teams will be visiting a street in their area while out on the beat and calling at homes to introduce themselves, leave their contact details and speak to residents about any issues.

Car fire on M3 near Sunbury

Firefighters used foam to put out a blazing car on Saturday (17) on the northbound M3 between junction two at Thorpe and one at Sunbury at about 10am.

Recruitment has already begun for this year's Kempton Park Race for Life, run by Cancer Research UK, on Sunday July 12.

Last year the race raised nearly £250,000 at Kempton Park alone and the charity aims to better that total this year.
